We got tired of running a good fundraiser on bad bingo software.
So we built the board we always wanted: one that looks as good as the night we were putting on, runs from any phone, and gives some of our profits back to kids in foster care.
It started with bingo and some spaghetti.
For more than a decade, I helped run a spaghetti-dinner-and-bingo night to raise money for Royal Family Kids — a camp and mentoring program for kids in foster care who've been abused, abandoned, or neglected.
We started by renting a Knights of Columbus hall for a few years, but eventually we outgrew the facility and needed to run our games with our own equipment. For a couple years we used what I was able to find, a piece of bingo software that looked like Minesweeper from Windows 3.1, but I was never happy with it.
It was ugly, confusing, visually busy, and not getting updates. I'd be hunched over a laptop while folks in the back row squinted at a board they couldn't read. The fundraiser night was always good, but the software never was.
Building websites is a big part of my career, so I did the obvious thing and built the board I wished I'd had: a clean caller I could easily run from my laptop. Over time I added a live board on every player's screen, and the winning patterns anyone could follow from across the room.
Dauber HQ is that board, finished properly and handed to everyone who runs a night like ours.
